SMITH Margaret Catherine

Margaret Catherine Smith (nee McDonald) was a Victorian by birth and came to Gnowangerup in 1903 to housekeep for her brothers who had commenced farming here.
The following year she returned to Victoria to assist her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Miles McDonald and family (there were twelve children) to travel to Gnowangerup where they also settled.
Ten years later, she met and married Louis Augustine Smith, a storekeeper of Gnowangerup. They raised a family of four boys and two girls.
Mrs. Smith was predeceased by her husband some years ago.
Mrs. Smith, never idle, but always cheerful, capably assisted on committees of many organisations within the district.
Committees such as Parents and Citizens Association, C.W.A., Agricultural Society, R. C. Church and Golf Club, in fact Mrs. Smith lent a helping hand with pleasure whenever or wherever needed.

Mrs. Smith, who was 83 years of age, had been in ill health for some time and was an inmate of the Gnowangerup Hospital at the time of her death on 18th August 1964.

On Tuesday, 18th, prior to her burial in the R.C. portion of the Gnowangerup cemetery, Father Crocetti said a Requiem Mass and his eulogy was short and moving.
Many relatives and friends were present at the graveside to bid their respects to a fine old lady of 62 years residence in the district.”
